I am happy to help Alice if I can, if she would like to talk to someone who only sattred looking at cryptic crosswords about 4 months ago. I am, though, at the other end of the spectrum to RobT, who of course has set crosswords himself.I have been making a study of SMH crosswords in recent weeks to improve my solving skills and so might be able to contribute to Alice's research a little.
I just finished reiadng your article about ODOT providing a 10 day notice before removing belongings along their right of way. As usual, I am left in awe of the picture you paint of those living on the streets here in Portland. Until you are willing to provide an accurate definition of who the homeless are you will not be able to publish a credible paper. Just living outside does not make a person homeless. This person MUST be doing something to change the situation they are in to be considered homeless I personally have been camping on an ODOT right of way for over a year now without ever having my belongings removed once. Would you like to know how this is accomplished? It's quite easy actually, I don't leave my stuff there. I'm sure their are many who will tell of how they are unable to pack all of their belongings. Chances are this is really because they just have too much crap. One simple rule of living on the street is if you can't carry it, you don't need it.I'm sure many will say that is a cold hearted expectation. To those I would say it is a realistic expectation and one I have lived by for nearly three years now.
I agree this was a real cracker! Lots of ralely good tough clues. And this cultural philistine doesn't mind admitting that Google was necessary to understand 1D's direct clue. (Since when has intimate knowledge of an American TV sitcom been a hallmark of culture?)It looks like there'll be disagreement on the nominations for Gold this week. (The two lists above do not overlap at all). BTW, the list at the top (RC?) mentions 9D which one did you ralely mean?I don't know why you dismissed 31A from Gold consideration it was one of my favourites. As were 7D and 23D. On the other hand, I didn't particularly like 8D nothing wrong with the clue, I just didn't like the answer it sounded like a made-up word. But it's in the Shorter Oxford so I can't ralely object.I have a couple of queries, which I'll post under confusions .
